Botstrapping health for trillion dollar companies

From 2012, Florian collaborated with Dr. Jay Parkinson and his team to build Sherpaa—one of the first telemedicine platforms, from the ground up.

Seven years on, Sherpaa was sold to build the foundation for digital health delivery for some of today’s most valuable companies including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Intuit, and others.

During Sherpaa’s, sometimes smooth, sometimes rocky, voyage, Florian was at the helm of all things design.

Florian’s work started by establishing the brand. The treatment was aiming to cross a throwback to the town doctor’s house call, with the sounds of Tibetan gongs promising not to neglect holistic natural care. This mirrored the thoughtful approach to care that Sherpaa’s doctors, many graduates of Hopkins medical school, pursued in shifts around the clock.

Florian’s team handled all of the stories that had to be told to break through: Brochures, presentations, and websites with illustrations, and subtle animations to explain how Sherpaa creatively solves health problems and fixes the challenged health system, one sign-up at a time.

Sherpaa’s path from a scrappy web-app to a full-fledged digital health platform was uncharted. Florian and the Sherpaa team guided the development of the system from manual script faxing to automatic e-prescriptions routing to the closest location, as the company scaled. They also implemented e-insurance cards, and allowed for vetting of anesthesiologists by Sherpaa guides, to make sure specialists accepted the insurance and rule out any surprise bills.

At the same time, the product design accounted for business expansions from a employer-only model, to individual, and later, family accounts as it scaled all over the country delivering care from your own, personal doctor available almost every day.

Outside of the patient apps, Florian designed the physician interface, drawing from the learnings from hours spent shadowing the doctors at work. He also designed the business portal that delivered anonymized information around benefit and insurance usage to deliver the best care, at minimum cost for the company.

It turns out that, if you can cut physical doctor visits by two thirds, and get people to see their doctor 24/7, around the clock, online, insurance companies will give your business a hefty break.

Sherpaa’s customers counted some of the top organizations in New York City and beyond, such as Casper, Betterment, Etsy, Warby Parker, Work & Co., and many more.
